Energy and Place
For this project we were asked to explore our sense of place and environmental ethic. Our projects, which included a visual and an essay, were supposed to answer the essential questions of the project, which are:
1. How does energy production impact place?
2. How does your sense of place, your environmental ethic, and your understanding of energy needs influence your perception of man's use of earth's resources and your own lifestyle choices?
My painting and artist statement are above, while my reflection and essay are below. To view a larger version of either document, click the rectangle icon in the bottom right corner.

Artist Statement
I had a hard time deciding on a final visual for this project, mostly because of the ideas that it had to convey. The ideas that I talk about in my essay are hard to represent visually without being a professional artist, which I am certainly not. How could I possibly represent the feeling that one gets when you have reached the top of a peak, when all there is above and around you is open sky? It’s a feeling that is hard to put in to words, let alone represent in an image. I wasted innumerable class periods trying unsuccessfully to come up with a visual that would represent my sense of place and environmental ethic. In the end, the solution ended up being changing the focus of my art piece ever so slightly. My essay focuses mainly on my sense of place, of which my environmental ethic is a small part. I had been trying to make my visual reflect this combination, but without success. My final visual is actually the opposite; it is mostly about my environmental ethic but still has some semblance to my sense of place. When combined, my essay and my visual provide a holistic view of my sense of place and environmental ethic.
My final art piece is a representation of how running and using your own power allows you to break free from the idea that all energy and power must come from artificial sources. I represented this idea by showing a runner “breaking the tape,” which was actually a power line. It also reflects my environmental ethic, which has to do with the intrinsic value of nature and our obligation to protect that value. I tried to represent this through both the backdrop of mountains and the sunset that is silhouetting the runner, making it look like he is glowing. The purpose of this effect was to show that the power of the individual and the power of nature are both able to break you free from the confines of civilization.

Wounded Knee Historical Inquiry
For this mini-project, we conducted an investigation of what happened at Wounded Knee creek on December 29th, 1890. The Wounded Knee massacre was the end of the Indian resistance. All of us have at least heard of the massacre, but very few people really understand what happened and why. Our assignment was to read and analyze 10 different documents about the events and then write a short textbook passage about what happened and why. After that, we watched a film about the wounded knee massacre and its causes. The final piece of the assignment was to write an analysis of the film, analyzing its historical accuracy and effectiveness. Linked below are my textbook passage with reflection and analysis of the film Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. Rhetoric and Ideology Project
For this project, I created a speech/presentation and an op-ed piece about the American food system.
A video of my presentation is to the right. If it's not working, try this link. My Op-ed is posted below, along with my project reflection. To zoom in on them, click the square icon at the bottom right corner of each document. |

This I Believe:
What do I believe and why?
For this mini-project, we each chose one of our core beliefs and wrote a short 500 word essay about it. In this essay, we also included stories of how our beliefs were acquired. I wrote my essay about the power of solitude. To read my essay and project reflection, click here.
