My Bio...
I'm a student at Animas High School, a project based charter school in Durango, Colorado. I have four main classes; Humanities, Math, Science, and Spanish. Aside from school, I run varsity track and cross country at Durango High School and participate in the Durango Nordic Ski Team. I enjoy all things outdoors, from downhill skiing to backpacking to rafting, and enjoy doing all of these activities in my spare time. My main interests academically are natural sciences and humanities, and my favorite way to learn these subjects is to apply them through projects that somehow connect my learning to nature.
Why Choose Animas?
I had a hard time deciding where to come to high school. I wanted to come to Animas, but I knew that DHS had a better reputation, just because they had graduated many classes before. I decided to give Animas a try, and I'm very glad that I did. First of all, Animas has the strongest school culture of any school in Durango. This means that students here are professional and mature. We also develop important life skills like public speaking and presentation. The Animas way of learning is also far more effective than traditional school, at least for my learning style. Projects help concepts stay with us, unlike more temporary traditional learning. For example, if I were to try to remember how to calculate mechanical advantage of a pulley from a lecture or notes, I certainly wouldn't remember it very well. Now however, I can remember that a pulley system in my Rube Goldberg had a mechanical advantage of 2 to 1. Then I can remember what that system looked like, then use that to figure out mechanical advantage. Aside from than that, Animas has excellent teachers that can connect with students at a far greater level that they would be able to at a larger school.
